NATURAL GAS SHOPPING GUIDE

How to compare natural gas rates in Georgia

Start with the gas you use and the fees you pay. A price per therm is one part of the comparison for a metro Atlanta home.

Start here

A practical comparison includes the therm rate, monthly service fee, eligible credits and the contract term. Use the same usage for every offer.

Start with 12 months of therm usage

A therm measures gas usage. Add the therms from your last 12 bills for an annual starting point. Heating can make winter usage much higher than summer usage, so multiplying one winter bill by 12 can distort the comparison.

Moving without a usage history? The home usage estimator gives a rough starting point based on home size and gas appliances. Treat that estimate as a scenario and try a higher and lower usage level before choosing.

Compare the rate and monthly fee together

Annual marketer cost =
annual therms × dollars per therm
+ 12 × monthly service fee
− eligible first-year credits

Convert cents to dollars first: 60¢ per therm means $0.60 per therm. When a fee is quoted as a range, our calculator uses the highest listed fee; your actual quoted fee may differ.

WORKED EXAMPLE · NOT CURRENT OFFERS

The lower rate can cost more

Suppose your home uses 600 therms per year and neither plan has credits.

Two hypothetical 12-month fixed plans
PlanRate / thermMonthly feeAnnual marketer cost
A60¢$9.95$479.40
B65¢$6.95$473.40

A: 600 × $0.60 + 12 × $9.95 = $479.40.
B: 600 × $0.65 + 12 × $6.95 = $473.40.

Plan B costs $6 less despite its higher therm rate. The two plans break even at 720 therms per year: the $36 difference in annual fees divided by the $0.05 rate difference. Above that usage, Plan A becomes cheaper.

Separate supply cost from the rest of your bill

Your marketer sells the gas; Atlanta Gas Light delivers it. AGL delivery charges are additional to the marketer rate and service fee. They still apply when you change marketers and vary with billing month and your property’s demand factor.

Our comparison excludes AGL delivery, taxes and one-time charges. It helps compare marketer costs, rather than quoting your entire utility bill. See AGL’s explanation of delivery charges ↗.

Read the conditions before choosing

  • Confirm whether the price is fixed or variable and how long it applies.
  • Check new-customer, delivery-group, credit, autopay and promo-code requirements.
  • Check cancellation fees and whether a credit requires staying through a particular bill.
  • Compare the offer’s monthly fee with the standard plan’s fee.
  • Read what happens when the initial contract ends.

A six-month price does not establish a full year of fixed pricing. Our average-month and five-year figures hold usage constant to make plans comparable; actual bills and future prices can differ.

The Georgia PSC also recommends comparing service and contract terms when selecting a marketer ↗. Use its published pricing charts ↗ alongside the marketer’s current offer and enrollment terms.
